Cultured Meat
Throughout the assignment of Composition in Two Genres, I thought of some ways that appealed to me if I had to have someone educate me on a topic. This brought me to my first genre which was aimed to be persuasive but presented in a cartoon that I had drawn regarding my rhetorical situation of the skepticism behind cultured meat. I found that many people were indecisive about the benefits of cultured meat as they associated it with ‘lab-grown meat’ which gave off a negative image in their heads. So with this cartoon, I formed a stance that showed support towards the benefits of cultured meat while also serving a purpose by educating the viewer on the topic such as answering many common questions that may come around when they are introduced to the topic of cultured meat. While creating my cartoon, I decided to keep the drawings childish but also keeping the language within the text bubbles in a not too formal and academic tone so that it could appeal towards younger people such as teenagers like me. When creating my second genre, I also decided to focus my genre on something persuasive yet descriptive but instead, I presented my work in the form of an ad. The rhetorical situation seen in the ad was somewhat similar to the cartoon I made as it was addressing the doubt behind cultured meat but also attempting to reassure people’s uneasiness towards it. The ad I created focused on directing the viewer on being open to trying cultured meat by assuring them that it was exactly like the meat they would consume often and that it provided the same nutrients they would normally find at their store-bought meat. My stance within the ad supports the introduction of cultured meat into society and its benefits that it brings. The friendly and casual tone in the design that I chose for my ad pointed to an audience of all ages and with people of all educational backgrounds to understand. Some barriers that I encountered while trying to communicate towards my audience were trying to make my work engaging so that the audience was interested in reading what I wrote. I overcame these barriers by making a couple of drafts and asking people of my age what their thoughts were when I presented this to them. The composing process was different from the research essay because unlike the research essay, there wasn’t too much analyzing that had to happen and it allowed expressing my stance towards a topic in a way that we chose. I chose these two genres because I felt a lot of the research presented for cultured meat was directed towards adults who were able to understand the complex science and language behind cultured meat, so I decided to create something that would be geared towards an audience of my age to understand. I found myself using a lot of persuasion in my rhetorical practices since my research behind the topic showed me that a lot of people were unsure about cultured meat and it actually providing benefits to us.
